Ways to Use CBD to Combat Nausea
Nausea is certainly a uncomfortable and concerning feeling. It can be caused by gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), food poisoning, bulimia, ulcers, side effects of medications and more.
While both over the counter and prescription medications exist to help subside this feeling, they can be expensive, riddled with other side-effects, and full of synthetic substances.
With the introduction of CBD as a health aid, some individuals with nausea are turning to this natural compound for relief. Research and clinical studies have already shown the ability of cannabis and marijuana to provide help with nausea for those on certain medications.
But can CBD do the same?
Cannabidiol (CBD) has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional medicine for helping to reduce or address a great many symptoms resulting from a myriad of health conditions. This natural cannabinoid is found in the cannabis plant, and unlike THC is a non-psychoactive compound that won’t get you “high”.
Research has shown that CBD can help with inflammation, anxiety and pain. It is also effective in treating muscle spasms and epilepsy, with the FDA recently approving the first ever CBD-based drug for epilepsy.
The more we study CBD, the more we uncover the plethora of health benefits it has to offer. But, can CBD help with nausea?
Is CBD Effective for Reducing the Symptoms of Nausea?
A link between the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and nausea has lead researchers to consider CBD as a possible therapeutic aid. Manipulating the ECS has been shown to regulate nausea and vomiting in humans and other animals.
Further research has indicated that CBD could work as an antiemetic for humans, both alleviating the effects of nausea and even preventing it.
CBD vs. Traditional Medicine for Nausea
Some individuals don’t respond well to pharmaceutical drugs due to their side effects, inefficiency, and the danger of combining them with other treatments.
Many traditional medications have side-effects such as constipation, dizziness, ringing in the ears, headache, anxiety, depression, profuse sweating, confusion and even slurred speech.
CBD may prove useful as an aid in reducing the effects of nausea and vomiting without causing unnecessary side effects and has been to relieving nausea associated with many different medical issues originating from both physical and psychological causes.
How to Use CBD for Nausea
The great thing about CBD (unlike many pharmaceuticals or medications) is that it can be both purchased and consumed in a number of different ways depending on your personal preference.
If none of those sound appealing, you can even inhale CBD oil from vapor-releasing pens, similar to the technology for e-cigarettes.
Consume CBD Oil Directly
Place drops of CBD oil under the tongue so that the mucous membranes in the mouth can absorb the CBD. This method works fast to help nausea subside. Drops and tinctures are also popular because dosage can be easily measured which offers consistency when dosing.
It is best to start off with a small dose and increase as needed.
You can also consume CBD oil by just swallowing it. Simply squeeze the CBD Oil onto a spoon or even your finger and place it on your tongue before swallowing.
This method isn’t quick though; After ingestion, it has to pass through the digestive system and be metabolized by the liver. Then the active compounds will eventually be delivered to the bloodstream.
Try CBD Capsules for an Accurate and Discreet Dose
Capsules also offer consistency since the dosage is measured out per capsule. However, this method also takes a while to take effect, and is therefore not ideal for those in need of immediate relief from nausea. It’s a preferred method for those who want a tasteless method of dosing.
Vaping CBD Provides Fast Absorption and Relief
Vaping is a good choice for nausea relief because you're not putting anything else in your upset stomach. Vape pens use high temperatures to turn CBD oil into vapor, which is then quickly absorbed by the blood vessels. Vaping is one of the quickest ways to obtain relief from nausea or other symptoms like pain and anxiety.
Using CBD Edibles for Nausea Relief
CBD edibles take the longest to work; the effects are only felt after about 30 minutes. If you know that your nausea will be coming on soon though, edibles can be a good option, stopping stomach discomfort before it even begins. If a certain medication that you must take induces nausea, for example, take your edibles half an hour before taking the medication. If certain mandatory actions or activities bring nausea on, you can be prepared, too.
With edibles, the effects usually last for longer than typical because of the slow way in which they are absorbed into the bloodstream.
Is CBD a good method for your nausea?
Consult with your primary physician about CBD to determine if it might be an appropriate antidote for your nausea. CBD is still a relatively new treatment method, and more study is in order before it is recognized as a legitimate medicine. The stigma attached to the use of the cannabis plant does not help to legitimize CBD's potential as a medical treatment, either.
But as CBD's popularity as potential therapeutic option grows, more people are recognizing its potential as a natural drug with very little side effects in comparison to pharmaceutical alternatives.
