Medical marijuana has long been in the spotlight for its seemingly endless array of potential uses and benefits, eventually leading to the legalization of marijuana for medical use in more than 30 US states in the past 23 years.
Up until recently, however, the focus from a medicinal perspective has been largely on the psychoactive compound THC. THC is a cannabinoid, and while there are at least 113 cannabinoids in the marijuana plant, THC has enjoyed its time in the spotlight, not only because of its medical benefits, but also because it is responsible for recreational enjoyment in the form of a euphoric high.
Recently, however, another cannabinoid has been making a big splash in the medical and scientific community. We’re talking of course about Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD.
CBD comes from two distinct parts of the cannabis plant: marijuana and hemp. Hemp-derived CBD has made it possible to get CBD oil in some areas that haven’t fully legalized cannabis for medicinal use.
With research emerging on what seems like a weekly basis, new and potential therapeutic uses for CBD are constantly being explored and discovered. Below we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common uses for this all natural health aid.

CBD oil and pain relief
Marijuana’s pain relieving properties have long been known. New research, however, is exploring CBD oil as an alternative to products that contain THC for those who wish to enjoy the pain relieving properties of cannabis without the stoned feeling that comes from THC.
Chronic pain: CBD oil can help manage various types of chronic pain, with pain caused by inflammation showing the most drastic improvements.
Arthritis pain: Cannabis oils and hemp oils can help with the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis by promoting restful sleep, alleviating pain, and reducing inflammation.
Glaucoma: Medical marijuana has a long history of helping glaucoma patients by helping alleviate the pressure and pain experienced by glaucoma patients which can help prevent macular degeneration. Now with CBD, glaucoma patients can enjoy the benefits of cannabis without the THC.
CBD oil and mental health
CBD oil’s potential benefits in relieving symptoms of certain types of mental health disorders has been one of the most exciting and effective applications for CBD oil in studies so far. Medical marijuana has been used successfully by many for stress, anxiety, and depression for quite some time, however, some people actually have an adverse reaction to THC, with its effects actually increasing the level of anxiety experienced. CBD, on the other hand, has been even more successful in helping alleviate anxiety, even in those who have not responded well to THC in the past. The effects of CBD on mental disorders is still being studied, but so far CBD oil has shown promise in helping with the following mental disorders.
Anxiety: CBD oil has been shown to alleviate several types of anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorders.
PTSD: CBD has experienced great success in helping treat the symptoms of PTSD by regulating the system that causes fear and anxiety in the brain and body.
Depression: Though less research has been done on CBD as a treatment for depression, preliminary studies show promise due to CBDs ability to help regulate serotonin levels in the brain.
Stress relief: Those who have difficulties managing the stresses of daily life may find solace in the relaxing effects of CBD oil.
Other uses for CBD oil
Insomnia: Cannabis oil can help relax the mind and body, allowing insomnia sufferers to achieve a peaceful night’s sleep by allowing them to get their heart rate down and clear their minds. CBD has also shown promise in helping people who experience insomnia due to nighttime anxiety and stress.
Cancer: Not only has CDB shown promise in helping with the side effects of chemotherapy and the pain associated with certain types of cancer, some studies actually show the use of CBD helping prevent cancer in the future!
Addiction: A review published in the substance abuse journal in 2015 found CBD effective in helping people with opioid, cocaine, and psychostimulant addictions. Cannabis oil has also shown promise in helping people quit smoking!
Epilepsy: CBD has actually been so successful in helping with certain types of epilepsy that the food and drug administration has approved a brand of cannabidiol for the treatment of seizures in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome, two forms of epilepsy that are notoriously difficult to treat.
Heart health: Hemp and cannabis-derived CBD oils can help improve heart health by balancing the negative oils in the system. CBD also helps stimulate antioxidant processes which improve the overall health of the cardiovascular system.
Appetite: Cannabis oils have been shown to help increase appetite while stimulating the digestive system.
Potential side effects
Most users don’t experience any negative side effects from CBD oil, however, some side effects may occur including:
