What is Organic Passionflower?

If you’re new to organic supplements, you may be confused about why someone would take a supplement of flowers. The fact is, many of our home remedies and over the counter supplements come from herbs and botanicals. Passionflower has been used medicinally since before Europeans immigrated to North America. It’s uses vary, and it’s been rigorously studied as a multifaceted aid to improve health and wellness.

Any time you try a new supplement it is important to consult with a doctor. It may interact with medication, and it could carry additional risks with certain populations (such as pregnant women).

Where does Organic Passionflower come from?

Organic passionflower comes from a climbing vine that is native to parts of Central and South America as well as the Southeastern United States. It is part of the Passiflora family of plants.

These plants bloom star-shaped flowers, sometimes with “hairy” petals, that come in a variety of colors.

How to Use Organic Passionflower

Apart from supplements, passionflower can be consumed in a variety of ways. It can be consumed as an extract, tea, or even in whole flower form. Some individuals have noted benefits from placing passionflower directly on the skin as a way to provide localized relief. Further, some companies incorporate passionflower into their food or drinks as a natural flavoring.

The Benefits

Alternative and traditional eastern medicine commonly employ passionflower to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, to increase relaxation and improve sleep, to aid with focus, calm inflammation, and more. At one point, passionflower was approved as an “over the counter’ sedative and sleep aid, however, this approval from the FDA was withdrawn in 1978, citing a need for further research.

It may also be used to aid with an upset stomach or to bring down inflammation. One species of passionflower, Passiflora foetida, has shown promise as a treatment for ulcers. In the past, passionflower was used to treat a variety of ailments. It has served as a treatment for liver problems, earaches, and even boils!
